School counseling at TAS is integral to the school's educational environment and provides a comprehensive package of care for students. The ultimate goal of a comprehensive school counseling program is student success. The program's design, delivery, and content are dedicated to enhancing the ability of all students to fully utilize the educational opportunities available to them. The program is delivered through direct and indirect services designed to address three domains of student development: academic, personal/social, and college/career.

In a comprehensive program, the school counselor serves as a leader, advocate, and collaborator that works with all staff to help develop an environment of emotional health, well-being and a haven for student success.

A dedicated portion of time is designed to help students explore their strengths, through extracurricular activities, clubs and community service—which enhances their character and ultimately aids in the process of college admissions selections. Universities are looking for students who offer more to a campus than their GPA will show.

Some of the activities and information sessions on offer with the School Counselor are as follows:

  • College fairs held on campus in the Fall and Spring.
  • Individual university representative visits.
  • “Counselor Teas” with parents, to dispense information and awareness.
  • Social/emotional counseling open door policy.
  • Academic counseling and transcript review.
  • PSAT testing and review of scores.
  • AP testing coordination.
  • Student workshop: College exploration, application and admissions information, understanding the college essay/personal statement, review of college choices.
  • Facilitate community service component of graduation requirement.
  • Parent night information sessions for 9-12th grade.
  • Counselor recommendation letters.

Ms. Karen Jacobi

College & Guidance Counselor

Ms. Karen Jacobi has been named the 9 – 12 College & Guidance Counselor beginning with the 2017 – 2018 school year, reporting to the Head of School. She joins TAS with varied professional experience that includes K – 12 Art and Secondary Guidance Counseling in Texas, USA, and China. Her hobbies include painting, reading and traveling.

Emily Piersialla

Ms. Emily Piersialla has been named the Learning Resource teacher beginning August 1, 2017. In her professional career, Ms. Emily has been a self-contained special education teacher at MacArthur School in South Holland, IL for 5 years. She then taught as the Learning Resource teacher at Majuro Cooperative School in the Marshall Islands for the past 2 years. She has held school positions of teacher, PTA teacher representative, student council teacher advisor, swim club advisor, leadership team member, WASC Self Study committee chair, and WASC visiting committee chair member.

Ly Nguyen

Ms. Ly was born in Vietnam and lived in the US for 20 years. She recently moved back to reconnect with family and to contribute to the education system in Vietnam. Her keen interest in Psychology and Education has inspired her to study School Counseling and Marriage Family Therapy after graduating from UC Santa Cruz. With valuable training and supervision, she became a counselor at various schools to provide individual and group counseling for students who struggled socially, emotionally, and academically for about three years. In addition to that, she worked as paraprofessional to support students with special needs to ensure that they reach their fullest potential.

Currently she is also committed to helping Hope Unending, an international NGO that aims to eliminate human trafficking and other social issues in Vietnam. During her spare time, she enjoys exploring more of Vietnam, journaling, and connecting with friends.
